Technology platforms to maximise your virtual event experience

CX has never been so important. Virtual events are a great way to engage customers and potential prospects, so choosing the right support platforms can make all the difference to the experience they remember.

CTO Marcus Lambert gives us a run-down of which virtual platforms you could and should use to support your virtual events, plus a few virtual tools to enhance the event experience.

As video conferencing becomes the norm, we’ve tested a whole range of platforms to help you choose which is the right one for your business. So whether you’re looking for the best overall performance or which app has the best event features, you’ll find a tool that suits your video conferencing needs.

Zoom – The video conferencing tool of the moment. It’s easy to use and for larger group calls it has a break out feature, where you can have breakout rooms – ideal for workshop scenarios. However, many security problems have been reported of late. So, it’s worth checking if any would affect your situation or company policies. Also, take a look at their privacy policy which in my opinion could be better…

Blue Jeans – A simple to use platform, like Zoom, it has some great features such as automatic transcripts and a great chat interface. If you’re an IT admin, it also has some really useful features as well, such great analytics to measure ROI and solve network issues. Definitely an alternative to paid Zoom.

WebEx – One of the original web conferencing platforms from a market leader, Cisco. It has many integrations that plug into your other enterprise systems, lots of nice admin features for user management and also works without the need for a lot of meeting room hardware.

GotoMeeting – Another Goliath in the web conference space. It’s full of features and has a long list of integrations like Webex. It is generally aimed at Enterprises. I personally prefer it to WebEx, even if there’s not a lot in it.

On24 – A popular platform to run webcast style events on. It’s filled with features such as chats, Q&A polls, attendee management and multi presenter modes. It allows you to customise the experience nicely and has a great content hub feature for engaging attendees after the event. Add all of this into your CRM and Marketing stack so you can track analytics.

Hopin – If you’re looking to take your trade show or event online, an all-in-one platform like Hopin can help you. Hopin mimics many of the interactions that happen at a face-to-face event, such as delegate networking, keynotes, breakouts and expo areas. Hopin also provides the back office type management features like delegate management and sponsorship registration. You have the option to set several stages for the streaming of live presentations with or without Q&A. Sponsors can be set up with booths so that delegates can drop in and have one-to-one conversations.  The networking feature allows you to do a speed dating style or form of network roulette where you get paired with another delegate.

Remo – Is another event platform where you can stream live presentations and Q&A sessions. But what it does really well is the networking side of events. You can create tables in a visual layout, and the delegates can move around them, joining the conversation on each.

Jitsi – A free secure web conference using browser-based WebRTC, as it’s browser-based you don’t need to download any software to make it work.

 

Supporting tools

Here are a few bonus tools to help make your virtual event even better.

Slido – A very popular Q&A and polling platform, it can be used in conjunction with virtual events or day-to-day web conferences. It can bring that much-needed interactivity into slide presentations, with polls, Q&A or brainstorming questions. It also has a new Live Quiz feature that’s worth checking out.

Strigo –  A great tool if you are looking to take your in-person training online.

Papercall – A big part of many events is the pre-event call for speakers; Papercall automates this process.

Mural – A virtual canvas platform, it’s great for a situation where you may have used post-it notes on a whiteboard. We use this platform a lot at Omobono for running workshops, project retrospectives and brainstorming. It also has a great template library to help you get going.

Miro – Another friendly whiteboard platform, its marketplace features lots of integration with programs such as Teams and Slack, as well as PM tools like Jira or Trello.

Ziteboard – A lightweight shared drawing tool which is simple to set up and use.

Lean Coffeetable – if you like the lean coffee style of meetings then Lean Coffeetable is great for your team to build up topics, vote and run timers.
